About The Set Of Noises Off

When the curtain rises on Saint John Theatre Company’s production of Noises Off, audiences will be treated to an impressive two-story set designed by one of North America’s top set designers, Neil Jampolis.

The set was made available to Saint John Theatre Company by the Atlantic Theatre Festival in Wolfville, Nova Scotia which just completed a 6-week run of Noises Off this past summer.

"ATF contacted us in September with a proposal that we buy their set," says SJTC Technical Director, Brian Goodwin. "Initially, I did not think we would be able to swing a deal within our budget… but the pictures of the set were so fabulous that I decided to call them back and see if we could work something out."

ATF agreed to rent the set to Saint John Theatre Company on the condition that SJTC provide resources to dismantle the 2-storey set in Wolfville and transport it to Saint John. So, in late October a team of one dozen SJTC volunteers made a weekend trip to Wolfville to bring the mammoth set back to Saint John.

"There have been some challenges," admits Goodwin." The ATF set was never built to be easily taken apart and re-built for touring. So some of the pieces were extremely large and weighed hundreds of pounds."

But Goodwin is nonetheless excited about bringing this fabulous set to the Imperial stage. "We never would have been able to build a set of this magnitude with the resources we have available to us at SJTC," says Goodwin. "I am excited to see it all come together."
