A Stark and Chilling Reminder

Saint John Theatre Company turns a tremendously difficult play into a riveting experience

"...Veteran director Bob Doherty pulled everything together, including making a great find in Rignanesi who not only bears a resemblance to Frank but was able to pull off the role convincingly. It was with Marissa Rignanesi that The Diary of Anne Frank would succeed or fail. Succeed it did, she did. The 19-year old was able to shave six years off her life and was convincing as the eager, inquisitive chatterbox that was Anne Frank. The rest of the cast was uniformly good with no actor standing out above the others.... Laura Higgs was a wonderful surprise as the Frank’s older daughter, Margot. The star of this show, however, is the play itself and it’s no wonder that it won a Pulitzer Prize....There was no curtain call, no bows, just the actors standing stock still and grim faced as the audience applauded them and this remarkable work that is a stark reminder of our ability to destroy and survive..Fabulous."

Grant Kerr, Times Globe, November 19, 2001
