Review
Torment and Triumphs
... Saint John native Percy captures Merricks thoughts, fears, and torments beautifully but it is his physical rendering of The Elephant Man that was most extraordinary. ... Percy carries the show on Merricks twisted back. He instills such pathos for the character that they are drawn directly into his world where they feel every blow he suffers as well as every success. The range of performances in SJTC productions is often uneven but in The Elephant Man, most actors rise to the occasion, perhaps spurred on by Percys gripping performance... Jeff Smith, as Treves, deserves singling out for his sensitive performance as the doctor who is battling his own demons. Set designer and Fredericton native Patrick Clark did a wonderful job of creating Merricks world within a world. Greg Gallagher, a Grade 9 student at RCS-Netherwood and Symphony New Brunswick regular, gave the play considerable atmosphere with his cello work. Sandra Donnelly also did a fine job creating the 19th century costumes...
