SAINT
JOHN THEATRE COMPANY TO MOUNT NEW BRUNSWICK PREMIERE OF HOT NEW
BROADWAY PLAY
"Proof" runs at Imperial Theatre March
18-20
Kizzy Kaye has big shoes to
fill.
When this 26-year old Xerox Systems Analyst takes
the stage on March 18th, she will be following in the footsteps of
the likes of Jennifer Jason Leigh, Anne Heche, Mary Louise Parker,
and Gwyneth Paltrow. These Hollywood names have all been
attracted by the role of Catherine, the troubled main character at
the center of David Auburn’s hot new play - Proof. And Kaye
will have her chance when Saint John Theatre Company mounts the play
at the Imperial Theatre on March 18-20.
“The pressure
is on, to say the least” says Kaye. “There is a great
deal of pride, and determination to do justice to a role that has
been played by genuine superstars.”
Proof tells the
story of Catherine, the daughter of a brilliant Chicago
mathematician who suffers from mental illness. After sacrificing her
education and youth to care for her father until his death,
Catherine’s grieving leads her to question how much of her father’s
genius - and mental instability - she has inherited.
“I love her bad attitude!” says Kaye of her
character. “She’s a troubled woman with so much to
share. Catherine is one of those roles an actor relishes
because she is so conflicted.”
And Kaye isn’t alone in
relishing the characters and story of Proof. Since winning the
2001 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Best Play, Proof has become
one of North America’s most produced plays and will soon be released
as a major motion picture. The Saint John Theatre Company will
mount the New Brunswick premiere of the play.
“It’s a
wonderfully gripping story,” says Stephen Tobias who will direct the
production. “It’s been described as a mystery, but it’s also
filled with themes of mental illness, sibling rivalries, family
obligations, and romance. I’m sure audiences will find the
show extremely charming, entertaining, and moving.”
Saint John Theatre Company’s production of Proof plays
at the Imperial Theatre at 8PM March 18 & 19 and 2PM & 8PM
on March 20th. Tickets are $15 - $22 and available at the
Imperial Theatre Box Office or by calling 674-4100. A special
price of $5 is available for students at 8PM on Thursday, March
18th. Please note, this production does contain some strong
language that may not be suitable for younger audience
members.
